Situated upstream the main dam, the Mao Pin XI Dam's role is to prevent flooding of a small town and a valley. In 1996 Kolo Veidekke delivered machinery for placing asphalt to the main contractor, one of China's largest, the Gezhouba Group.

As part of the contract Kolo Veidekke taught Chinese operators the use of machinery. Kolo Veidekke was engaged as advisor to the builder. Kolo Veidekke's involvement in China was channeled through the Advisory Group of Norway (AGN).

In total, the dam's volume is approximately 12 million m3. The amount of asphalt used was 48 500 m3. The asphaltic core's thickness varies from 0,5 metres - 1,20 metres. Natural rock was used as filter substance on each side of the asphaltic core, ranging in size from 0 - 60 mm.
